History

Geary Boulevard, originally known as the Point Lobos Toll Road, was named after John W. Geary, San Francisco’s first mayor. Geary, a Pennsylvanian, arrived in San Francisco in 1849 and quickly became a respected leader, first as the city’s postmaster and later as mayor. His leadership helped shape the city during a time of rapid growth and disorder.

Over time, Geary Boulevard became a key commercial corridor, serving the Richmond District and beyond. Since 1922, the Greater Geary Blvd Merchants Association has worked to preserve this historic corridor, supporting its businesses and ensuring Geary remains a vibrant part of San Francisco.
